Quick & Safe Repair

Extension cord repair is not quite as easy as it first seems, and an improperly repaired cable can hide dangers without fixing them.

Cloth tapes are not appropriate for repairing damaged extension cords and they can mask a problem without fixing it. They are not intended for electrical insulation and they are not really waterproof.

Some vinyl tapes like electrical tape can get the job done, but they should not be considered a long term solution. Over time, they will lose their adhesiveness and begin to pull away from the damaged cord.

For as close to permanent a repair as you can hope for, use silicone fusing tape. This tape, when stretched and then wrapped in several layers of a damaged extension cord, bonds to itself in a way that keeps it from working loose, even when flexed and stretched.

If you’re not confident in your ability to do a safe repair, you should consider getting rid of the damaged cord and replace it with a new one.
